Frank Ragnow is officially back in retirement and the Detroit Lions will be without one of their top cornerbacks for most of the rest of the regular season.

The Lions placed cornerback Terrion Arnold on injured reserve Monday, Dec. 1, with a shoulder injury.

Arnold has been in and out of the lineup for the Lions this season due to a slew of injuries. He first injured his shoulder in a Week 5 win over the Cincinnati Bengals, when Lions coach Dan Campbell expressed concerns Arnold had suffered a long-term injury, and he returned last week from a two-week absence due to a brain injury.

A first-round pick out of Alabama in 2024, Arnold played 18 snaps in a Thanksgiving loss to the Green Bay Packers as part of the Lions' cornerback rotation with starters D.J. Reed and Amik Robertson and backup Rock Ya-Sin.

He had one interception this season in seven starts.

The Lions (7-5) placed Arnold on IR to make room for tight end Hayden Rucci, claimed off waivers from the Miami Dolphins.

The Lions are shorthanded at tight end with Sam LaPorta out for the season following back surgery and Brock Wright dealing with a trachea injury.

The Lions also opened tight end Shane Zylstra's 21-day practice window on Monday in hopes of getting him back from injured reserve and placed Ragnow back on the reserve/retired list.

Ragnow retired abruptly in June after seven injury-riddled seasons, then briefly ended his retirement before Thanksgiving in hopes of playing again this season.

The Lions announced over the weekend that Ragnow failed his physical because of a Grade 3 hamstring strain and would not return this year.

Campbell said at the time he wasn't sure if Ragnow would continue his comeback attempt in 2026, the final season on Ragnow's contract, though the Lions suggested in the statement announcing Ragnow's injury that he likely was done playing football.

"Frank has always been a team-first guy and is a true warrior," the statement read. "He will forever be a Lion."
