Marc-Andre ter Stegen has not played a single game for FC Barcelona this season, having been sidelined since the summer after having undergone back surgery.

In a big development, though, the German international has returned to group training today and is getting closer and closer to receiving the green light from the medical department.

However, given that Joan Garcia is now the undisputed starter in goal for Barcelona, Ter Stegen might not get into the lineup – something that could hurt his World Cup ambitions with Germany.

As such, talk of a January exit, either on loan or permanently, has been doing the rounds for some time now, with the player himself understood to be open to the possibility after being reluctant initially.

Interest in Ter Stegen growing

Now, according to reliable transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, interest in Ter Stegen from several clubs across Europe is growing ahead of the January window.

The 33-year-old has been told that he would need to play regularly in order to be the No. 1 for Germany at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

That is something that cannot be guaranteed at Barcelona under the current circumstances, which makes an exit the best possible choice for the veteran shot-stopper.

Reports of interest from clubs in Turkey and England have been doing the rounds for quite some time now.

And while Romano does not mention the names of the teams that are looking at Ter Stegen for January, he states that the interest in the Barcelona captain is growing stronger.

A loan exit, thus, could become a serious possibility in the coming weeks – a situation that can be win-win for both the player and Barcelona.

For now, though, the former Borussia Monchengladbach star will be focused on regaining his rhythm with regular training sessions and be fully fit and ready for whatever lies ahead in January.
