Before Avengers: Doomsday comes around, Marvel has just released a new Avengers series, and while it bears no connection to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the project is perfect for Doctor Strange for one reason. The next two Avengers movies are expected to be the biggest events Marvel Studios has ever put out, topping Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
The multiverse makes that possible, as the cast of the next Avengers movie could be made up of not only MCU actors, but stars from all over Marvel's long live-action history. That has already been proven to be the case for at least one franchise, with Fox's original X-Men returning in Doomsday. However, a major MCU hero will seemingly be absent.
Doctor Strange Will Seemingly Not Appear In Avengers: Doomsday
Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange in front of a building site
Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange is one of the MCU heroes with the most multiversal knowledge. He was last seen joining Charlize Theron's Clea to stop an incursion that had been accidentally created by his actions. That setup made him perfect for a lead role in Avengers: Doomsday, but it seems like the hero will not be directly involved in the MCU event.
In January, Cumberbatch said Doctor Strange would not appear in Avengers: Doomsday, claiming the reason was "the character not aligning with this part of the story." Later that month, the actor backtracked, stating that he was going to be in the movie, saying, "I am in the next one... Don't ever believe anything I say." However, I don't believe him.
Cumberbatch might have simply been told by Marvel to walk back on his previous comments to maintain the next Avengers movie's secrets. After all, he did say back then that Doctor Strange would later become central to Avengers: Secret Wars, so his comments seemed believable. Given that Cumberbatch was not announced as part of Avengers: Doomsday's cast reveal, his original comments might prove accurate.
Doctor Strange's Avengers TV Show Appearance Helps With The Wait For His MCU Return
If Doctor Strange is not in Avengers: Doomsday, then we could only see him again in 2027, when Avengers: Secret Wars ends the Multiverse Saga. After all, the only other possible project that he could show up in 2026 is Spider-Man: Brand New Day. However, the movie already features two guest Marvel heroes, the Hulk and the Punisher.
As such, Marvel's new Avengers TV show, the two-part LEGO Avengers: Strange Tails, which is out on Disney+, emerges as the project where fans can get their Doctor Strange fix. The hero does not play a major role in the series, but Doctor Strange appears for a hilarious exchange with Hawkeye and Black Panther when they come to the Sanctum Sanctorum for help.

Posts By Felipe Rangel Nov 14, 2025Critical Role member Liam O'Brien voices Doctor Strange in Marvel's new Avengers series. He has voiced the character before in several Marvel projects, such as Ultimate Spider-Man, Avengers Assemble, Marvel Future Avengers, and more. As such, seeing a fan-favorite Doctor Strange star in 2025 helps make up for Benedict Cumberbatch's Avengers: Doomsday absence.
